Introduction

So, you have heard all about the purported potential benefits of microdosing and are excited to begin taking your tiny doses of psychedelics in hopes of leading a healthier and happier life.

You might even have acquired your psychedelic substances and you are raring to go.

But, a few questions still linger:

How often should you microdose?

Is it everyday, or every other day? Or some other pattern?

And, should you be taking any other supplements with it?

Fear not. We have got you covered in this three part series on microdosing protocols here at Chemical Collective. In this series we are looking at different protocols, or approaches, to microdosing, including their dosing patterns, the rationale behind them, and who they might be suitable for.

In part one we looked at the Fadiman “one on, two off” protocol. Today we will be looking at the Stamets Stack, a slightly different approach proposed by Paul Stamets; a man who Jim Fadiman has said “knows more about mushrooms than anyone in the universe.”

Who is Paul Stamets?

Paul Stamets is a renowned American mycologist and entrepreneur, celebrated for his groundbreaking work in the world of fungi. With a career spanning decades, Stamets has dedicated his life to exploring the potential of mushrooms, from their ecological benefits to their medicinal properties.

The founder of Fungi Perfecti, Stamets has pioneered innovative techniques for cultivating and utilising mushrooms. His research has led to significant advancements in mycoremediation, a process that employs fungi to clean up environmental pollutants. Beyond his environmental endeavours, Stamets is a strong advocate for the medicinal properties of mushrooms and has conducted extensive research on their potential health benefits.

His influential work has inspired countless individuals to explore the world of fungi, and his contributions to the field have earned him widespread recognition and respect. Stamets is a leading figure in the psychedelic community, and his proposed microdosing protocol, The Stamets Stack, which incorporates niacin and lion’s mane, has garnered significant attention. Alongside The Fadiman Protocol, The Stamets Stack is one of the most popular microdosing protocols in use today.

What is the Stamets Stack?

The Stamets Stack is a microdosing protocol which involves combining three key elements:

  • Psilocybin: The psychedelic compound found in magic mushrooms.
  • Lion’s Mane: A medicinal mushroom believed to support cognitive function.
  • Niacin: Vitamin B3, known for its role in energy metabolism.

Let us look at each of these elements in depth.

Psilocybin

While psilocybin is often associated with its psychedelic effects at higher doses, microdosing involves consuming sub-perceptual amounts. This means the user experiences no noticeable alterations in consciousness. No visuals, no mind-blowing epiphanies, and no resurgence of repressed memories. In the context of microdosing, psilocybin is believed to influence brain function in more subtle ways.

One of these ways is through neuroplasticity; the brain’s ability to form new neural connections. Neuroplasticity is essential for learning, memory, and adaptation and research suggests that psilocybin may promote neuroplasticity. By potentially enhancing this process, microdosing psilocybin may contribute to improved cognitive function and creativity.

Additionally, psilocybin may also stimulate neurogenesis, the birth of new brain cells, which is crucial for brain health and cognitive function.

By potentially influencing both of these processes, microdosing psilocybin is theorised to contribute to improved cognitive abilities, creativity, and overall brain health. However, it’s important to note that the exact mechanisms underlying these effects are still being explored, and more research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits and risks.

Lion’s Mane

Lion’s mane is a medicinal mushroom widely consumed for its potential cognitive benefits. It contains unique compounds called hericenones and erinacines, which may stimulate the production of nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein that promotes the growth and survival of brain cells.

By supporting NGF production, lion’s mane may play a role in promoting brain health and cognitive function. There is also some research which suggests it could potentially benefit individuals with cognitive decline or neurological disorders. Additionally, lion’s mane has been associated with other potential health benefits, such as immune system support and digestive health.

As with psilocybin, it’s important to remember that the research on lion’s mane is promising, but more human studies are needed to fully understand its effects and establish its role in cognitive enhancement.

Niacin

Niacin, a B vitamin also known as vitamin B3, plays a crucial role in various bodily functions. In the context of the Stamets Stack, it is included for its potential to support overall brain health and enhance the effects of psilocybin and lion’s mane.

Niacin is a precursor to NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), essential for hundreds of biochemical reactions in the body. In this regard, we can think of niacin as a building block. Our body uses it to make NAD, a molecule that is important for giving our body energy as it is involved in lots of processes that help turn food into fuel.

Additionally, niacin has vasodilatory properties. This means that it can widen blood vessels and improve circulation. This increased blood flow to the brain is believed to enhance the delivery of oxygen and other nutrients, including psilocybin and lion’s mane, potentially supporting cognitive function.

While niacin is generally safe when consumed in recommended amounts, high doses can lead to flushing, a common side effect. The Stamets Stack typically involves lower doses of niacin to minimise this risk but it is worth being aware of before using.

Rationale Behind The Stamets Stack

Paul Stamets conceptualised the Stamets stack based on the synergistic potential of its components. The rationale behind this combination is that psilocybin may induce neuroplasticity and neurogenesis, lion’s mane supports nerve growth factor, and niacin enhances blood flow to the brain. He proposes that by combining these elements, individuals can optimize brain function and promote cognitive enhancement. As a result they can experience enhanced cognitive benefits, increased creativity, and improved mood.

Here is a quick look at the potential synergistic effects of combinations within the trifecta.

  • Psilocybin and Niacin: Niacin’s vasodilatory properties may enhance the delivery of psilocybin to the brain, potentially amplifying its effects on neuroplasticity.
  • Psilocybin and Lion’s Mane: Both compounds are believed to support neuroplasticity and neurogenesis, which together may have a complementary effect.

Niacin and Lion’s Mane: The combination may enhance blood flow to the brain while simultaneously supporting nerve growth production, creating an optimal environment for brain health.

The Stamets Stack Cycle: 4:3 or 5:2

Unlike the Fadiman Protocol’s “one day on, two days off” pattern, the Stamets Stack involves a slightly different cycle.

Stamets recommends a four-day-on, three-day-off schedule. This means consuming the stack for four consecutive days, followed by a three-day break.

He has, however, also said that the protocol can be used in a five-day-on, two-day-off cycle, stating that the protocol should not be too rigid.

The primary goal with this cycle is to allow the body sufficient time to experience the potential benefits of the stack while preventing the development of tolerance to psilocybin. The rationale behind this is to maximise the benefits of psilocybin while allowing the body to rest and recover.

Duration of The Stamets Stack

Similar to the Fadiman Protocol, there is no strict guideline for the duration of the Stamets Stack. The optimal length of a microdosing cycle will vary depending on individual goals and responses.

Many people find that starting with a shorter duration, such as a few weeks, allows them to assess the effects and make adjustments as needed. Some individuals may choose to continue microdosing for extended periods, while others may opt for cyclical patterns, incorporating breaks between cycles. An example of a break would be to take a few weeks off every few months.

It is key to listen to your body and adjust the duration of the Stamets Stack accordingly. If experiencing any negative side effects or symptoms, it is recommended to discontinue immediately.

Downsides of the Stamets Stack

The major benefit of the Stamets Stack is the combination of all three components. However, the Stamets Stack does have potential downsides.

One potential downside comes from the use of niacin. Niacin can cause flushing when consumed in higher doses and this side effect, characterised by redness and warmth of the skin, can be uncomfortable for some. This effect can be minimised by gradually changing the dosage to find a comfortable spot but it is good to be aware of this potential side effect in advance and adjust the niacin dosage accordingly.

Another downside is that finding the optimal balance of psilocybin, niacin, and lion’s mane can be complex. Determining the correct dosages for each individual component to achieve the desired effects overall may require experimentation and take some time. This period of trial and error may be off putting for some.

Who is it For: Ideal Candidates for The Stamets Stack

The Stamets Stack appeals to individuals especially interested in optimising brain function and cognitive performance. Those who have already experienced benefits from microdosing or the use of lion’s mane mushrooms may find the Stamets Stack to be a natural progression and be well suited to incorporate the extra supplements into their routine.

The stack’s straightforward dosing schedule may also be preferable for those seeking a microdosing regimen that easily fits into their weekly routine. Unlike the Fadiman Protocol, which requires careful planning due to its shifting dosing days, the Stamets Stack allows for more consistent dosing patterns, such as Monday to Thursday or Monday to Friday. This flexibility can be particularly beneficial for those with busy schedules.

The flexibility of the dosing cycle may also be preferred for those who prefer a little less rigidity in their approach. It allows people to take four doses one week and five the next. People can switch between the two or stick to one.

Tips for the Stamets Stack

Effectively implementing the Stamets Stack requires careful consideration and experimentation. Here are some tips to for the Stamets Stack your experience:

  • Dosage Experimentation: Finding the optimal dosage for each component of the Stamets Stack is important. You might like to begin with low doses of psilocybin, niacin, and lion’s mane, gradually increasing them as needed to find your desired effects. Remember, what works for one person may not work for another.
  • Flexible Scheduling: The Stamets Stack offers flexibility in dosing frequency. Experiment with different cycles, such as four or five days followed by a break, to find what suits your lifestyle and produces best results.
  • Quality Ingredients: Prioritise high-quality sources for psilocybin, niacin, and lion’s mane to ensure purity and potency.
  • Mindful Consumption: Incorporate mindfulness practices into your routine to enhance the effects of the stack.
  • Track Your Progress: Keeping a journal to document your experiences can help you identify patterns and adjust the protocol as needed.
  • Consult a Healthcare Professional: Consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement or microdosing regimen, especially if you have underlying health conditions.

Remember, microdosing is a personal experience, and what works for one person may not work for another. Experimentation and patience are key to finding an optimal approach.

Final Thoughts

The Stamets Stack presents a unique and pioneering approach to microdosing, combining psilocybin with niacin and lion’s mane for cognitive enhancement. While anecdotal evidence suggests many promising benefits, it is important to remember that scientific research on the Stamets Stack is still in its early stages, and the long-term effects of combining these substances are not fully understood. For those proceeding, it would be wise to approach the stack with caution and realistic expectations and remember that it is not a substitute for professional medical treatment or advice.

In our next and final instalment of this series on the blog exploring microdosing protocols, we will look at the “one day on, one day off” approach and intuitive microdosing. We will also provide guidance on selecting the microdosing method that best suits your individual needs and goals. Check back soon to find out more.

Until then, stay safe, microdose mindfully.
