Introduction

Can consuming minuscule amounts of psychedelic substances truly improve your life?

Many people who have tried microdosing, the practice of consuming tiny ans sub-perceptual amounts of psychedelic substances, will tell you: yes, it can.

Microdosing has gained significant attention in recent years and the number of people microdosing continues to rise. At the forefront of this movement is psychologist and researcher James Fadiman. His pioneering work has shaped the understanding and practice of microdosing.

He is such an OG of the movement, that one of the most popular microdosing protocols in use today was developed by and named after him: The Fadiman Protocol.

In this article, we will look at the Fadiman Protocol: what it is, how it works, who it is for, and the man behind the protocol. This article will be the first in a short series about microdosing protocols here on the Chemical Collective blog. My intention with the series is to provide a comprehensive overview of different approaches for those of you considering microdosing.

If you are completely new to the concept of microdosing, start with our excellent guide written by David Blackbourn: Microdosing: Everything We Know

Without further ado, let us dive in.

Who is James Fadiman?

James Fadiman is a renowned psychologist and researcher best known for his pioneering work in the field of psychedelics. A Stanford University graduate, Fadiman has dedicated his career to exploring the therapeutic potential of altered states of consciousness. While his work spans a broader spectrum of psychedelic exploration, it is his exploration into the subtle effects of microdosing that has captured widespread attention and sparked a global conversation.

As a pioneer in the field of psychedelic research, he has made significant contributions to our understanding of microdosing. He wrote The Psychedelic Explorer’s Guide, a manual offering practical advice and expert guidance for safe and intentional psychedelic experiences, exploring their potential for healing, self-discovery, and creativity.

Published in 2011, it contains a chapter on microdosing, which is now something of a foundational text on the subject. It outlines the basic principles of microdosing, provides practical guidance on implementation, and shares anecdotal reports from individuals who have experimented with this approach.

Due to this chapter and his continued involvement in the field, Fadiman has been instrumental in popularizing the concept of microdosing, observing and reporting on individuals’ experimentation with sub-perceptual doses of psychedelics to potentially enhance creativity, mood, and overall well-being. His research, primarily based on anecdotal evidence and self-reporting, has generated considerable interest and debate within the scientific community and among the public.

What is the Fadiman Protocol?

The Fadiman Protocol is a specific microdosing regimen developed by James Fadiman.

It involves consuming a microdose of a psychedelic substance, typically LSD or psilocybin, every fourth day.

It follows a cycle of “one day on, two days off”, and as such is also known as the “one on, two off” protocol.

This cycle is then repeated for a specific period, often several weeks or a few months.

Rationale Behind the Fadiman Protocol Schedule

The core idea behind this protocol is to allow the body and mind to experience the potential benefits of the microdose without developing tolerance. By introducing a two-day break between doses, the body has sufficient time to metabolize the psychedelic substance, preventing the rapid development of tolerance. This allows for consistent effects over time.

The two days off between doses are believed to help the substance to fully clear the system and for the body to reap the maximum benefits.  The two-day break is also believed to provide an opportunity for the body and mind to integrate the subtle effects of the microdose, allowing for deeper and more lasting benefits.

Fadiman has said that people report that they still feel some residual effects the day after a microdose. Then on the third day there is something of a normal day to return to baseline before microdosing again.

It is important to note that the specific reasoning behind this pattern is largely based on anecdotal evidence and theoretical considerations, as scientific research on microdosing is still in its early stages.

Fadiman emphasizes that this schedule is a starting point, and individuals may find that variations in dosing frequency or duration work better for them.

Duration of the Fadiman Protocol

The Fadiman Protocol typically involves following the “one day on, two days off” pattern for a specific period. While there is no strict guideline, common durations range from several weeks to a few months.

Reports from microdosers online and in Reddit forums suggest that taking a few weeks off every month can be beneficial for maintaining the effectiveness of microdosing. This practice allows the body to reset and potentially enhances the effects of subsequent cycles.

Some individuals find continued benefit in microdosing beyond this period, opting for an indefinite schedule. They find that microdosing provides consistent benefits and decide to incorporate it into their long-term wellness routine.

The choice of duration might also depend on other factors such as individual goals and tolerance development.

A person’s goals or desired outcomes may also influence the length of the protocol. For example, someone seeking to enhance creativity might opt for a shorter duration, while those addressing mood or focus issues might choose a longer period.

Some individuals may also experience a gradual decrease in effects over time, even with the two-day break. In such cases, extending the protocol or taking a longer break might be necessary.

Ultimately, the decision of how long to follow the protocol is a personal one, based on individual experiences and goals. It is essential to approach microdosing with flexibility and listen to one’s body. If the desired effects are not achieved or if adverse reactions occur, it is advisable to discontinue the protocol.

Downside of the Fadiman Protocol: Keeping Track

Microdosing with the Fadiman Protocol offers potential benefits like improved mood, enhanced creativity, and increased energy. However, one major downside of the Fadiman Protocol is its dosing schedule.

It follows a “one day on, two days off” pattern, but the “on” day changes from week to week

This can make it difficult to establish a routine and can be easy to lose track of. For example, if your first dose falls on a Monday in week one, then your next doses would be on Thursday and Sunday of the same week. Then, in week two, your first dose would fall on Wednesday with your next dose on Saturday, and so on.

Some people find it helpful to mark days on a calendar or set reminders to stay on top of the Fadiman schedule.

Other people prefer to follow other protocols which have easier to follow dosing patterns. We will explore these in upcoming blog posts.

Who Is It For: Ideal Candidates for the Fadiman Protocol

The Fadiman Protocol is generally considered suitable for anyone looking to explore the potential benefits of microdosing in a structured manner.

The two days gap between doses allows for a gentle approach to microdosing, if one is fine with changing the dose days each week as mentioned above, it is suitable for beginners.

If you are looking for a cost effective way to microdose, the Fadiman may also be for you. Given the two day gap between doses, it is more cost effective than the Stamets’ Stack Protocol (the other most common and popular approach which I will cover in more detail in my next blog post). This is because where the Fadiman protocol has 2-3 doses a week, The Stamets’ Stack has 4-5 dosing days per week.

Tips for Implementing the Fadiman Protocol

To finish, here are some practical tips for effectively implementing the Fadiman Protocol:

  • Keep a journal: Document your experiences, including physical and emotional sensations, to track changes over time.
  • Choose a consistent time: Taking your microdose at the same time each day can help establish a routine. Before 10am is recommended by Fadiman so that any mild stimulant effects from the psychedelic will not negatively impact sleep.
  • Use a calendar or reminders: As the dose days change each week, it can be useful to mark them on a calendar or set reminders.
  • Utilize wellness: Incorporate wellness practices like meditation, yoga, or time in nature to enhance wellbeing and ‘load the dose’ on microdose days.
  • Create a supportive environment: For your first experiences, find a calm and comfortable setting for your microdosing sessions.
  • Be patient: The effects of microdosing can be subtle and may take time to manifest.
  • Communicate with your doctor: If you have any underlying health conditions or are taking medications, consult with your healthcare provider before starting a microdosing regimen.
  • Be aware of legal restrictions: Be aware of the legal status of psychedelic substances in your jurisdiction.
  • Source high-quality materials: If possible, obtain psychedelics from reputable sources to ensure purity and potency.
  • Prepare doses in advance: To streamline the process, prepare pre-weighed doses or capsules in advance. This saves time and makes it easier to adhere to the dosing schedule.

Remember, microdosing is a personal journey, and what works for one person may not work for another. It is important to listen to your body and adjust the protocol as needed.

Final Thoughts

While research on microdosing is still in its early stages, anecdotal evidence suggests potential benefits in areas such as mood, creativity, and focus. However, it’s key to approach microdosing with caution, considering the potential risks and individual variations in response. It is also important to remember that microdosing is not a substitute for professional medical treatment. If you are experiencing significant mental health challenges, seek help from a qualified mental health professional.

Ultimately, the decision to microdose is a personal one. The Fadiman Protocol offers a structured approach to microdosing that may be suitable for those new to the practice. By understanding the core principles of the Fadiman Protocol, you can make informed choices about whether this practice aligns with your personal goals and well-being.

Although the Fadiman way is one of the most popular methods of microdosing today, it is not the only way. In my next blog post here on Chemical Collective, we will delve into the Stamets’ Stack Protocol, another popular method developed by famous mycologist Paul Stamets. Check back soon to find out more.

Until then, stay safe, microdose mindfully.
